One of the ways we do that is by comparing the two (or more) objects’ size, automatically judging the smaller object to the figure, and the larger to be the ground. You can see that in the images above — whatever its color, we always see the smaller rectangle as the figure, the larger as the background. The symmetry principle of Gestalt theory doesn’t mean everything has to be the same. Rather, it refers to the tendency of the brain to perceive symmetrical elements as being connected, even if they aren’t.

Rather than seeing a combination of different colored squares and semicircles, you likely see the whole image of a multi-colored hashtag.
